Following the success of the inaugural Set your clothes free textiles collection event in May, Green Industries SA is again calling on South Australians to dig deep into their wardrobes and give their pre-loved clothing and linens a second chance at life.

The second Set your clothes free event – the the state’s largest ever clothing and linen donation drive – will take place on Saturday 1 November, from 9 am to 3 pm.

With 13 locations open across metropolitan Adelaide and regional SA,  this free event invites residents to drop off high-quality but unwanted clothing and footwear, as well as unwanted household linens in any condition.

The event is a collaborative effort between local councils and charity partners including the Australian Red Cross, Lifeline, Red Nose, the RSPCA, Vinnies and Salvos Stores.

Australians are the world’s biggest consumers of fashion, purchasing an average of 53 items of clothing per person each year. Yet a significant portion of those end up unworn or underused, buried in wardrobes and destined for landfill.

South Australia’s charity sector is often burdened with sorting and disposing of poor-quality donations, which ultimately cost them more than they help.

This event encourages South Australians to donate items that are genuinely reusable, giving them a second chance at life.

At the 24 May event, almost 20 tonnes of unwanted textiles were collected for donation and recycling, including:

  • 11.8 tonnes of high-quality clothing and footwear collected for resale
  • 7.8 tonnes of low-grade household textiles collected for recycling.

What you can drop off

  • Clothing and footwear in good, wearable condition – if you wouldn’t gift it to a friend, don’t donate it.
  • Household textiles in any condition – worn down, torn or paint-stained – as long as it’s been washed.

Items not accepted include poor-quality clothing and footwear, doonas, pillows and mattresses.
