Single-use plastic bans update

Single-use plastic bans update

  • Single-use plastics ban
  • July 11, 2025

New single-use plastic bans come into effect from 1 September 2025. Plastic soy sauce fish containers will be banned and the exemption for plastic straws and cutlery attached to items (such as straws attached to drink boxes and spoons attached to yoghurt) will end.

The Government of South Australia has paused the planned ban on non-compostable plastic produce stickers, originally set for 1 September 2025, in response to concerns from growers and industry bodies.

The pause provides more time for South Australia to seek harmonisation with other states and for growers to transition their processes.

A 24-month extension is also in place for the use of non-compostable plastic barrier bags for unpackaged dairy products, meat, fish and seafood until 2027.

Certified compostable barrier bags must continue to be used for all unpackaged fruit and vegetable, nuts and confectionary.
