Set your clothes free in SA’s largest clothing donation drive

Green Industries SA is calling on South Australians to dig deep into their wardrobes and give their pre-loved clothing and linens a second chance at life by taking part in Set your clothes free – the state’s largest ever clothing and linen donation drive.

Taking place on Saturday 24 May from 9am to 3pm, this free event invites residents to drop off high-quality but unwanted clothing and footwear, as well as unwanted household linens in any condition, at one of 8 collection sites across Adelaide and regional South Australia.

The event is a collaborative effort between local councils and charity partners including Charitable Reuse Australia, Salvos Stores, Red Nose, RSPCA, and the Australian Red Cross.

Australians are the world’s biggest consumers of fashion, purchasing an average of 53 items of clothing per person each year. Yet a significant portion of those end up unworn or underused, buried in wardrobes and destined for landfill.

"Too often, our charity sector is burdened with sorting and disposing of poor-quality donations that ultimately cost them more than they help, and do not get reused," said Green Industries SA Chief Executive Josh Wheeler.

"This event focuses on collecting clothing items that are genuinely reusable, giving them a second life in charity stores.

“It’s not just about clearing space in your home – it’s about participating in the circular economy, helping the environment, and supporting reuse of quality clothing through charities.”

What you can drop off

  • Clothing and footwear in good, wearable condition – if you wouldn’t gift it to a friend, don’t donate it.
  • Household textiles in any condition – worn down, torn or paint-stained – as long as it’s been washed.

Items not accepted include poor-quality clothing and footwear, doonas, pillows and mattresses.
