With funding from Green Industries SA’s Business Sustainability Program, Funerals Australia has launched the Better practice sustainability guide for funeral directors – a new resource aimed at driving environmentally sustainable practices across the funeral industry in South Australia.

The guide features educational materials and real-world case studies designed to raise awareness and provide practical guidance to funeral directors. It highlights opportunities to adopt sustainability initiatives that deliver environmental, social, and economic benefits to their businesses.

Development of the guide marks the first phase of a broader sustainability project by Funerals Australia, supported through a $100,000 Lead-Educate-Assist-Promote (LEAP) grant from Green Industries SA.

The second phase of the project will include a series of workshops and one-on-one consulting sessions to build the knowledge, skills, and capabilities of Funerals Australia members. These sessions will support the implementation of the guide and help accelerate the adoption of sustainable practices throughout the sector.

This initiative represents a significant step toward embedding sustainability within South Australia’s funeral industry and supporting businesses to operate in a more environmentally responsible way.
