Sustainable kerbside services grants

Sustainable kerbside services grants

The Sustainable kerbside services grant program supports South Australian councils to improve waste management services and increase landfill diversion by transitioning to, or introducing, kerbside collection services that align with the SA Better Practice Guide: Sustainable Kerbside Services, providing fortnightly general waste collection services as a default option.

Online information session

An online information session will be held at 11 am on Thursday 19 November to offer support for applicants. To RSVP, please contact han.tran@sa.gov.au by no later than 5 pm Wednesday 18 November.

How much money is available?

Area-wide implementation of Sustainable Kerbside Services (may be staged)
Up to $300,000 (excluding GST) with co-contribution requirement.

Pilot of Sustainable Kerbside Services or alternative collection models
Up to $100,000 (excluding GST) with co-contribution requirement.

Who can apply?

Councils or local government subsidiaries established under the Local Government Act 1999 (SA).

What will we fund?

Support is available in 2 areas:

  1. Staged, area-wide implementation of a sustainable kerbside service for council areas with 3-bin systems (Priority)
  2. Pilots across a limited geographic area to:
    • trial a sustainable kerbside service
    • evaluate alternative bin and collection system models that encourage optimum uptake (available to regional councils only).

What WON’T we fund?

Grant funding will not be available for projects that:

  • are not supported by a source-segregated kerbside organics collection system taken to a licenced facility for processing into soil improvement products for recognised high-value end markets
  • do not clearly demonstrate how contamination will be measured and managed following the system introduction to ensure that kerbside contamination targets are met
  • do not demonstrate strong potential for an increase in diversion of food waste or recyclable materials from landfill
  • are retrospective (to be eligible, projects must start after the execution of grant agreement).

When does it close?

04.12.2026
