In-home food waste system grants

In-home food waste system grants

The In-home food waste system grant program provides support to councils to implement effective, best practice food waste recycling systems for households and small businesses using kerbside organic collection services.

Online information session

An online information session will be held at 11 am on Thursday 19 November to offer support for applicants. To RSVP, please contact han.tran@sa.gov.au by no later than 5pm Wednesday 18 November.

How much money is available?

Up to $10 per serviced tenement.

Who can apply?

Councils or local government subsidiaries, established under the Local Government Act 1999 (SA), that provide kerbside-collected organics bins and accept food waste for processing into organic materials and supply to recognised end markets can apply for funding.

What will we fund?

Funding is available for the cost of food waste containers and education material included with containers at the time of distribution.

Priority will be given to applications that have a budget already allocated and committed to area-wide roll-out of ventilated food waste systems.

GISA will fully fund the cost of an initial supply of a roll of 75 compostable liner bags delivered to all households in a geographic area using ventilated food waste systems.

What WON’T we fund?

Grant funding will not be available for projects that:

  • are not supported by a source-segregated kerbside organics collection system taken to a licenced facility for processing into soil improvement products that meet Australian Standard 4454-2012 and supplied to recognised high-value end markets
  • do not demonstrate strong potential for increased diversion of food waste from landfill
  • rely upon education only, or where education components are not included on or in the container at the time of delivery to households.

When does it close?

04.12.2026
