Set your clothes free | 1 November

Following success of the inaugural Set your clothes free textiles collection event in May 2025, Green Industries SA is again partnering with local councils and charities to help South Australians donate their unwanted, high-quality clothing and pass on their unwanted household linens for recycling.

On Saturday 1 November, from 9 am to 3 pm, 14 drop-off points will be open for residents to drop off unwanted textiles.

Australians are the world’s biggest consumers of fashion, purchasing an average of 53 items of clothing per person each year – but a significant portion of those end up unworn or underused, buried in wardrobes and destined for landfill.

Set your clothes free focuses on collecting clothing items that are genuinely reusable and giving them a second life in charity stores, and easing the burden placed on charity stores that can become overwhelmed with poor-quality donations that can’t be re-sold.

  • What items will be accepted at the drop-off sites?

All types of clothing and footwear that are unwanted, but still in good enough condition to be worn will be accepted to be donated to partnering charities. If the items are good enough to give to a friend or family member to wear, then they’re good enough to be donated.

Household linens, including bedding, bath towels, kitchen towels, curtains and more can also be dropped off.

Any household linens still in good condition will be donated to our participating charities for resale, while linens in unusable condition will be processed and recycled.

  • What items won't be accepted at the drop-off sites?

Items that will not be accepted include:

    • clothing and footwear in poor condition – if you wouldn't give it to a friend or family member, it isn't in good enough condition to be donated
    • doonas and pillows
    • mattresses.

  • Do the items have to be clean?

All clothing and footwear items must be clean and free of any stains to be accepted.

Household linens must also be washed to be accepted.

Linens with paint stains will also be accepted, as long as they’ve been washed since their last use.

  • Can the household linen items have tears/rips?

Household linen items that have been torn or damaged will be accepted.

Please note that clothing and footwear items that show any damage will not be accepted. These items must be in a wearable condition.

  • Where will the collected textiles go?

Collected clothing, footwear and linens that are of a high quality will be sorted and distributed to our participating charitable organisations for resale.

Collected household linens that are not high enough quality for resale will be processed for recycling by TeXtura – the dedicated textile logistics and recycling solutions division of Shred-X.

TeXtura will work with Australian-based textile recyclers to process the linens into new textile products through a mechanical recycling process.

  • I can't make it to a drop off site on 1 November. What should I do?

If you can't make it to one of the 14 drop-off sites from 9 am to 3 pm on 1 November, don't fret – there are plenty of options to donate your high quality clothing and footwear, and unwanted linens outside of the event.

High quality clothing, footwear and linens

Charity stores across South Australia accept donations of high-quality clothing, footwear and household linens year-round. Simply search for a charity store near you where you can drop your items off at a date and time that's more suitable for you.

You'll just need to check the store's opening hours before you drop your items off – you can only place items in the bins provided by the store.

The Animal Welfare League (AWL) and RSPCA South Australia also sometimes take donations of good quality blankets and towels, for use in their shelters.

Before donating, please give the shelter a call to check they have capacity to take your items.

    • AWL Sorting Centre
      55 Kapara Road, Gillman
    • RSPCA
9a Majors Road, O’Halloran Hill (north-west corner of South and Majors Rds).

    Low quality household linens

Low quality bathroom, bedroom and kitchen linens can be dropped off at your nearest Sheridan Outlet store:

    • Sheridan Outlet Parkside
      101 Glen Osmond Road, Eastwood

    • Sheridan Outlet Adelaide Airport
Shop T10 Harbour Town, Tapleys Hill Road, West Beach

Quilts, blankets or linen with filling are not accepted. Before dropping off your materials, please make sure they are clean.

  • What was the result of the 24 May event?

At the 24 May event, almost 20 tonnes of unwanted textiles were collected for donation and recycling, including:

    • 11.8 tonnes of high-quality clothing and footwear collected for resale by Salvos Stores, Red Nose, RSPCA, and the Australian Red Cross
    • 7.8 tonnes of low-grade household textiles – such as old sheets, towels, curtains and more – collected and transported by Shred-X to the Upparel facility in Victoria, where items will be shredded to be used as filling in new products including boxing bags and pet beds

The event was the state’s largest ever clothing and linen donation drive, and South Australians doubled the number of textiles collected at the 2024 Give a sheet event.
