Fleurieu Region Circular Business Program: Peninsula Providore

Fleurieu Region Circular Business Program: Peninsula Providore

Identifying opportunities to re-use and re-purpose items and by-products of the business to reduce waste.

Peninsula Providore is a provider of paddock-to-plate and direct-to-consumer products, offering goods that are grown, processed, and bottled in-house.

In 2023–24, Peninsula Providore took part in Business Victor Harbor’s Fleurieu Region Circular Business Program.

Objectives

The primary objective of Peninsula Providore's participation in the program was to identify opportunities to minimise waste through recycling and reuse practices, thereby accelerating the transition to more circular business practices.

The importance of sustainability

For Peninsula Providore, sustainability is not just a buzzword, but a core ethos. The business is driven by the principle of leaving a positive impact on the environment and the community it serves. By reducing waste sent to landfill, Peninsula Providore aims to uphold its commitment to environmental responsibility while also aligning its practices with its values.

Program outcomes

Participation in the program enabled Peninsula Providore to identify several opportunities for improvement, including:

  • implementing a pressure washing system to clean and reuse 20L drums used by restaurants and venues, diverting these containers from landfill
  • exploring solutions to reduce or eliminate the use of plastic in packaging and preparation processes, with a focus on finding sustainable alternatives that align with the business's commitment to environmental stewardship.

What’s next?

Looking ahead, Peninsula Providore is dedicated to further advancing its sustainability initiatives. The business intends to continue its efforts to reduce plastic usage by exploring alternative packaging materials and innovative solutions.

By remaining committed to its mission of leaving the environment in a better condition than it was found in, Peninsula Providore aims to set a precedent for sustainable practices within the farm-to-table industry.

Conclusion

Peninsula Providore's participation in the Fleurieu Region Circular Business Program exemplifies its commitment to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. By actively seeking opportunities to minimise waste and embrace circular business models, Peninsula Providore not only enhances its own operations but also contributes to the broader efforts towards a more sustainable future for the Fleurieu region and beyond.

About the Fleurieu Region Circular Business Program

Business Victor Harbor’s inaugural Fleurieu Region Circular Business Program was funded by Green Industries SA and delivered by Rawtec.

The program supported 5 businesses local to the region to move to more circular practices.

Over a 12-month period, participating businesses attended a series of workshops where they learnt about the principles of the circular economy, and created an action plan on how they could apply these to their business.
