FAQs: Disposal vouchers for flood-affected materials

Is everyone eligible for free vouchers?

To be eligible, your property needs to have been impacted by flood water. Only materials affected by flood water are accepted. Anyone impacted by the flood water can register for free vouchers by calling 1800 302 787.

Where can I collect and redeem my vouchers?

Vouchers can be collected and redeemed at any participating transfer station (also listed below).

At the transfer station, you will be asked for your Client ID and name. If you do not have a Client ID, you will need to register by calling 1800 302 787.

Can I drop off my first trailer load of flood-affected material when I collect my vouchers?

Yes, this is encouraged.

What materials are accepted at the participating transfer stations?

The types of flood-affected materials you can dispose of include:

  • hard waste (furniture, mattresses, household items, whitegoods)
  • garden waste and trees, branches and reeds that may have washed onto your property
  • debris from your house and sheds (metal, bricks, timber, piping, fittings)
  • plant and machinery (tools, lawnmowers, bikes and similar)
  • water sport equipment.

Other accepted items which must be kept separate include:

  • electronic equipment and electrical items
  • hot water systems
  • air conditioners.

Can I bring very wet and/or muddy waste to the transfer station?

Yes, however no liquid waste, septic pump-outs or similar.

How many vouchers am I entitled to?

Each property will be allocated 5 vouchers, and each voucher can be used for a load no larger than an 8 x 5ft caged trailer.

Do the vouchers expire?

Yes, the vouchers are valid to 30 June 2023.

Are vouchers transferrable?

No, vouchers are linked to your property. If you have friends and family who have material that has been affected by floods, and they need free vouchers, they will need to register by calling 1800 302 787.

I received vouchers, am I still eligible for other clean-up support as well?

Yes, the free vouchers are the first of many measures to assist people impacted by flooding. There will be more support for the clean-up announced soon.

I can’t take waste to the transfer station myself (no car, no trailer, not well enough, etc.), can somebody else take my waste there for me?

Yes, you can ask for help from family and friends in the disposal of flood-affected materials. Vouchers are linked to your client ID number and property, so anyone using one of your vouchers on your behalf will need to provide a voucher, client ID and address at the waste transfer station.

I would like to take part in the voucher program, but I am unable to take the material myself and I don’t have anyone to help me.

You can contact a relief centre to see if any assistance may be available to you. There will be more options for disposal and assistance announced soon.

Are there any restrictions around how I can bring my waste in?

Yes, the voucher program is designed to enable the use of personal vehicles such utes and standard trailers, up to an 8 x 5ft caged trailer or similar.

What precautions do I need to take?

We recommend that you wait for a structural assessment before entering water-affected buildings, or where asbestos may be present. Asbestos is not accepted at any of the participating transfer stations. If you are concerned you may have asbestos on your property, please register for a free assessment and we will organise for the asbestos to be safely removed for free. Free asbestos removal is still going to be some weeks away, please be patient.
